Dark images definitely convey a mood Mark. I am a believer that the processing a photographer does depends on his or her mood at the time it is processed. True in your case? I know it is the case when I process.
Well, it must be obvious that I’m busy with some not so pleasant issues right now. But I liked the details in the shot and they seemed to convey a sense of foreboding gloom. Then :-/ Now

Dark can definitely be beautiful, conveying a range of moods depending upon the subject. They also cause one to look more intensely at the image.
